General Overview
Residential care aides work in assisted facilities or patients’ homes where their prime responsibility is to provide assistance to patients under their care. They are trained to provide patients with limited nursing care and also help them with their toileting, washing and mobility needs. Since they work with patients very closely, they are trained in keeping their temper in check and showing compassion as it is often difficult to cater to the needs of people with disabilities on a constant basis.
There are no prerequisites to work as a residential care aide as far as education is concerned although employers prefer a high school diploma or an equivalent. Some training is required to handle the patients properly which is why residential care aides are provided with medical instructions before they are deployed to a resident’s home.
Providing medical assistance is not all that residential care aides do. They are also required to assist patients in handling personal needs such as changing beds, washing and ironing clothes and shopping for groceries.
